The History of Golf in Turkey
Early Period and First Steps
Golf in Turkey was recognized and became popular later than in many other countries. The game began to be played in Istanbul during the late Ottoman Empire, around the end of the 19th century. However, during this period, golf remained a sport played mainly by a small foreign community.
The Republic Era and Early Clubs
The real development of golf in Turkey began during the Republic era. One of the key clubs in the spread of golf in Turkey was the “Bosphorus Golf Club,” founded in 1926 in Istanbul. This club operated in the Bebek district of Istanbul. During this time, golf was still predominantly a sport enjoyed by foreign diplomats and businesspeople in Istanbul.
Ankara Golf Club
In 1951, a significant step in the development of golf in Turkey was taken with the establishment of the Ankara Golf Club. This club, based in the capital city, provided an opportunity for local golfers to develop and play the sport. It also played a role in the founding of the Turkish Golf Federation.
Establishment of the Turkish Golf Federation
The more organized and systematic development of golf in Turkey began with the establishment of the Turkish Golf Federation (TGF) in 1996. The Federation aimed to promote the sport nationwide and to build golf courses meeting international standards. Since its establishment, the TGF has contributed to the development of golf by organizing various tournaments and developing training programs.
The Rise of Belek and Antalya
From the late 1990s onwards, the Belek region in Antalya became the center of golf tourism in Turkey. The first modern golf course, “National Golf Club,” opened in 1994. Belek quickly began hosting international standard golf courses and became recognized as a global golf destination. Notable golf courses and clubs in this region include:
National Golf Club: Opened in 1994, it is Turkey’s first golf course with international standards.
Gloria Golf Resort: Opened in 1997, it features three different golf courses.
Antalya Golf Club: Opened in 1998, it is known for its two courses, PGA Sultan and The Pasha.
Carya Golf Club: Opened in 2008, it is known as Europe’s first fully illuminated golf course.
International Tournaments and Turkey’s Position on the Golf Map
Turkey has made a name for itself in the golf world by hosting international golf tournaments. Notably, the Turkish Airlines Open, held since 2013, is part of the European Tour and is a significant event. This tournament attracts world-renowned golfers and greatly contributes to Turkey’s golf tourism.
Modern Era and Popularization
Today, golf is becoming increasingly popular among both local and foreign golfers in Turkey. Major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya boast many golf clubs and courses. Additionally, various training programs and academies are available to nurture young golfing talent.
Economic and Tourist Contributions
Golf tourism significantly contributes to Turkey’s economy. The Belek region in Antalya, in particular, attracts tourists year-round and makes a substantial economic contribution to the area. Golf tourism helps stimulate the development of hospitality, restaurant services, and other tourist activities due to its high spending potential.
Despite its relatively short history, golf in Turkey has developed rapidly. With the construction of modern golf courses, international tournaments, and the efforts of the Turkish Golf Federation, Turkey has become a recognized global golf destination.
